Reflective vs Formative Indicators
Reflective indicators are effects of a construct and covary together, while formative indicators are causes that define the construct and need not covary.
reflective vs formativeWhat it means
With reflective measurement, the construct causes the items, so they move together and are interchangeable (e.g., several items for satisfaction). With formative measurement, the items cause the construct and each captures a distinct part of it, so they are not interchangeable (e.g., income, education and occupation forming socioeconomic status).
Why it matters
The two need different validity checks. Reflective constructs use reliability, AVE and loadings. Formative constructs do not use alpha or AVE, because high inter-item correlation is not expected; instead you check collinearity (VIF) and the significance of indicator weights.
How to choose
Ask whether dropping an item would narrow the construct's meaning (formative) or simply lose one interchangeable measure (reflective). Decide before collecting data, since the measurement model shapes your whole analysis. See the PLS-SEM page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Cronbach's alpha for formative indicators?
No. Alpha and AVE assume reflective indicators that covary and are interchangeable. Formative indicators are not expected to correlate, so you check collinearity (VIF) and indicator weights instead.
How do I decide reflective or formative?
Ask about the direction of causality: if the construct causes the items and they are interchangeable, it is reflective; if the items define the construct and each adds unique meaning, it is formative.
